What games/systems are you most interested in/do you collect?

Warhammer 40k is my greatest love. The universe, the models and the gameplay have kept me interested for over fifteen years now. In that time I’ve played all sorts of other games, but none of them have quite had the staying power of 40k. Currently, I’ve just started Age of Sigmar and we’re also playing Monsterpocalypse.

Any specific armies?

My very first army was Necrons. I had to sell them to pay my rent at university and I still miss them. After that, I played Black Templars for about nine years. I had a huge Ork army, a small Space Wolves army, and another Necron army in that time too. I stopped playing 40k during 6th and 7th edition because I really disliked the rules. When 8th came out with Dark Imperium and was amazing, I knew it was time to play again. I joke that I fell to chaos sometime during 6th and 7th edition, but the truth is there was one army I always wanted to play right from the beginning and that was Death Guard. They’re my current army (and my first fully painted army) and I love everything about them. They fit my preferred style of gameplay perfectly, they’re slow, tough and strong. The models are beautiful and their lore is really interesting.

What aspect of the hobby are you most interested in?

All of it. That’s why it’s so awesome. And so all-encompassing. There is no escape, and that’s how I like it. I’ve been painting and playing games since the beginning. My partner used to regale me with stories from the universe, and during my lapse in playing, I started reading the novels. I dived head first into the Horus Heresy in about January of 2018 and, apart from occasionally coming up for air, I’m still going. Also, a new Space Marine game, please!

What compelled you first start or restart the hobby?

It was my boyfriend at the time (now fiance) who introduced me to 40k. He had been into it since he was younger and wanted someone to share the hobby with.

Do you have any future plans for your hobby?

I have just started an Imperial Fists army for 40k. It was inevitable really. I adore the new Primaris models and I really wanted to paint some more of them. Also, Death Guard are very close combat orientated and I was itching for something shooty as well. Although the itching might just be one of Papa Nurgle’s many gifts… I played around with the idea of quite a few different armies before settling on the brother chapter of my first marine force. I’ve always loved the Imperial Fists and I thought it was about time I went back to the sons of Dorn. Plus painting yellow is a really good way to challenge myself and improve my skills.

What sort of materials do you use to create your hobby? How long does it take you to complete a project?

Anything and everything I can get my hands on. Paints wise, I mostly use Citadel paints and I’ve gained a love for DaVinci brushes, especially some of the tiny ones. Do we have to talk about how long it takes me to complete a project? I am the slowest painter ever. I also get distracted easily by other projects. Factor in that I work full time and I basically just take forever to do anything to completion. Mortarion took me two months to paint. 30k Magnus… well I got him for my birthday in July and I finished him just after Christmas that year… I have fun though and I think that’s the main thing.

What inspires you to keep going? Do you admire any other hobbyists?

Twitter has been a massive inspiration to me. I’ve got so much more done since I started using it as a hobby blog last September. When people show interest in something that is partly done, it drives me to complete it. Plus knowing I’m going to be posting pictures online motivates me to paint quickly but at a high standard. Everyone has been so positive and so supportive. I love my twitter friends.

I really admire my fiance. He has an amazing style of painting and paints to such a high quality really quickly. He’s also fantastic at the game and it’s very rare that I can beat him. But we always support each other and help each other improve which is awesome. And I annoy him to no end when he’s teaching someone rules or lore by butting in with little titbits I know… I’m learning to be better at not doing that.

Online I admire all the other hobbyists out there who are sharing their work and supporting everyone else. This sounds super cheesy but it’s so important to me. I’ve been a part of some very negative communities, both online and in person. Anyone who takes the time to leave a positive comment for someone, or helps them with painting tips or tactics in a respectful way is a hero in my eyes. Keep lifting each other up.

What do you find most frustrating about the hobby?

That I don’t have enough free time to do as much of it as I’d like… That it’s not tactically advantageous to take Mortarion in every game… other people who are negative or put people down.

Do you have any tips for any aspiring hobbyists – beyond the usual ‘ practice daily’?

Be passionate. Do what makes you happy, not what other people expect. There is no right or wrong way to enjoy the hobby. Don’t be scared to try new things, new painting techniques or new tactics. It’s about having fun.

What is your fondest hobby memory?

I have so many fond memories of this hobby. It is something that has been in my life for a long time and bought me a lot of enjoyment. I’ve made so many friends and spent so many wonderful days painting and playing with people. For my favourite memory? Maybe the time we had a huge game of 40k Apocalypse and it took over the whole downstairs of our house, with two huge tables joined by a bridge which we had to duck under sometimes to get around. We had people dropping in and out for two days, taking over each other’s armies, chatting, eating food and laughing. There was an epic moment on the bridge where the Tyranid biotitan wiped out all but one Assault Marine who held the line for two more turns!

Anything else you would like to tell our readers?

I think I’ve waffled enough!
