What games/systems are you most interested in/do you collect?

I have a lot of 40k and I’m slowly building a collection of Age of Sigmar models. I have Warhammer Underworld (but I guess that’s just more AOS), I also bought Adeptus Titanicus when it came out last year, mostly because I wanted to paint a warlord titan. I think the Forge World ones look a bit off in 28mm scale, but in 8mm I think they look just fine. Oh and Blackstone Fortress (but I guess that’s just more 40k).

Any specific armies?

I paint a lot of different models, My main collections are Ultramarines, Tyranids, Necrons. I have smaller collections of Orkz, Eldar, Grey Knights, Genestealer Cults and Thousand Sons.

As for AOS I just tend to buy start collecting boxes, paint a small force and do something else, apart from Sylvaneth; I have a small army of them.

So to answer the question … Some 🙂

What aspect of the hobby are you most interested in?

Oh painting, I love the painting. I used to play some, but I’m lazy and the club I used to play with stopped meeting so I let that side of things slip. I really should get back into gaming again. I do like a Warhammer themed Game (gogo Total Warhammer 2!) and back in the day I used to read the old world Warhammer Books.

What compelled you first start or restart the hobby?

I first started when I was just a tiny lad! My brother got Rogue Trader (which I still have sitting next to me as I write this!) then Warhammer Fantasy Role-play, which we played quite a bit of. I collected some of the models (i.e. hassled my parents into buying me them) and was terrible at painting them!

Then life did what life does and whilst always being a 40k/warhammer lover and playing paper based roleplaying Games, I did other things – Computer games, getting drunk, work.

I’ll briefly cover why I got into (back into?) painting as the complete details will probably drive anyone reading to start a new hobby…

I work in IT and normally it’s moderately interesting … however one day I was tasked with transferring the configuration of a proxy server, to another proxy server.  However it had to be done manually because the two systems were from different manufacturers.

I had to look at a spreadsheet with thousands of rows, clean up and and reclassify the data, all by hand … it took 2 months and by the end I wanted to do something creative because I was sad. So Painting!

TL:DR boring spreadsheet made me paint.

That was 3 years ago.

Do you have any future plans for your hobby?

Buy more shelves? Oh just keep on painting really, I’m just random with what I paint, maybe play some games with the stuff I paint?

What sort of materials do you use to create your hobby? How long does it take you to complete a project?

Beer? Citadel paint, because I like the system they have. It’s really good at getting base colours, layers shades and highlights to work together. The only thing I use really that’s not citadel all the time is Vallejo Black and grey primer. I hand prime everything and this stuff goes on soooooo well!

It usually takes me about a week to paint a “unit” of about 5-10 models, 2 weeks for mounted units, a character can take a week, some of the bigger models like the knight titan took a month. It depends on how into it I am.

What inspires you to keep going? Do you admire any other hobbyists?

Beer?!  The fear of spreadsheets?! To be honest I’m not big on finishing but I do like getting models finished, it’s really satisfying.

I don’t specifically follow any painters. I follow painting facebook groups and browse a lot. I often see models I think are pretty cool.

What do you find most frustrating about the hobby?

Building models … I want to paint them! (Is it bad to like push fit? ^^)

Do you have any tips for any aspiring hobbyists – beyond the usual ‘practise daily’?

Start Small, don’t buy a massive army that will totally intimidate you and you will lose heart!

Learn to paint colours. So start with a base colour, wash it, layer it then highlight it. Build up your abilities and then expand them. If you paint stuff that looks ok that will build your confidence to do the next thing.

Also don’t be afraid of hand priming. I see so many posts on facebook telling people to spray prime, you really don’t need to. If it’s a choice between hand prime or wait ‘til the  temperature is right, the humidity is right, the light is right, the wind speed is right, the stars are right? Just hand prime, you will paint more.

What is your fondest hobby memory?

I do remember one example which was very complimentary. I played Ultramarines at my gaming club, someone commented “I don’t like Ultramarines … but looking at your army I find myself wanting to paint them”.  Guess he didn’t see many Ultra armies ^^ but it was nice of him.

Anything else you would like to tell our readers?

If you got this far then thanks for reading! Thank you Jenn for letting me wibble on!

  1. Thanks for posting, Jenn! Interesting that this is the second time recently that someone has mentioned priming by brush rather than spray – I brush everything except varnish and primer/basecoats on large scenery items. Maybe it’s because that’s what I’ve always been used to!
