Fangirl Feature – 40kChris

This week’s Fangirl Feature is from 40kChris

Hobby showcase! Share with us: Your favourite images

What games/systems are you most interested in/do you collect?

I’m heavily into 40k with some branching out in to Kill Team, I have enough Chaos Demons to attempt some Age of Sigmar at some point in the future.

Any specific armies?

Chaos Space Marines… shooty Black Legion and choppy Flawless Host, Slaanesh Demons, and Renegades and Heretics from Forgeworld.

What aspect of the hobby are you most interested in?

I really love building, and converting my own unique models. A favorite practice is corrupting Imperial models to make what want for my own forces. Such as converting a Redemptor into a Hellforged Leviathan. After that… it’s reading, mostly 40k/HH novels, I take a good amount of inspiration for my models from things I’ve read.

What compelled you first start or restart the hobby?

A friend in high school was my first contact with any type of miniatures. He was into painting things up into Legion of the Damned AND he was good at it. I remember thinking it was so cool, but I couldn’t even afford to get a few minis back then. Fast forward to my future wife, her 9 year old son, and I taking a weekend break in Canada. We happened to see a GW store in the wild and stopped in, her son and I were both kind of awestruck since I had never been in an actual GW store before that point. We got the 3rd edition box set, went back to the hotel, and started putting together models and painting them that night. He and I went to 4 Gamesday(Chicago) when he was a little older, and those road trips were great.

Do you have any future plans for your hobby?

Right now my plans are to finalize this CC focused Flawless Host possessed blob dialed in a bit more, and get it painted. After that, start really looking at what I want to keep for my Black Legion and get rid of everything else. Go through the Renegades and Heretics and get everything down to a single heavy detachment, consolidate the militia into cultists and get rid of everything else. Basically if I’m not using it, it needs to go.

What sort of materials do you use to create your hobby? How long does it take you to complete a project?

I use A LOT of plastic bits for most of my projects, but I’ll use green stuff, plastic tubing, and guitar string as well. If it fits what I need, then I’m more likely to use it. Time is different for each project, I have a hard time forcing myself to get things done hobby-wise. Even if it’s small things like washing all the leather bits on a squad with Agrax. I try not to rush anything because I want to enjoy it all, and not resent any part of it.

What inspires you to keep going? Do you admire any other hobbyists?

Trying to get a full army finished keeps me going, with a family and my own business it’s hard so it all goes really slow. Tyler Mengel, Jeff Vader, Krautscientist, the Creative Twilight gang, Cadian Shock, and pretty much everyone I follow on Twitter. They all have different approaches, and it’s all wonderful to take in.

What do you find most frustrating about the hobby?

Trying to get an army fully built and painted before a codex/edition/model change. I’m just really slow going.

Do you have any tips for any aspiring hobbyists – beyond the usual ‘practice daily’?

If you haven’t already… join Twitter and find people there whose work/ideas you enjoy. You can lurk to your hearts content, but at some point reach out and join the conversation. Very rarely will you be disappointed. Everyone there has been nothing but welcoming, supportive, and encouraging.

What is your fondest hobby memory?

Going to my first Gamsday tournament with my stepson with my 13th Company Wulfen heavy list. It didn’t do great, but it was a ton of fun. We had a blast playing the day away, getting some Chicago pizza, and talking over our games on the drive home.

Anything else you would like to tell our readers?

Ask questions if your curious about a painting/modeling thing or tactics, there are really no secrets in the hobby.
